How BTaP Works with Parents

'I literally feel through our sessions I am learning how to be the mum I really aspire to be!'
Katie-BTaP Parent-2020

Parents - Small Group BTaP

Baby Talk and Play Small Group (5 x 1.5 hour sessions)
Suitable for children under 1.
A small group course for mums or dads to be with their baby and think together about how they learn to communicate from birth. How we play and talk to our babies matters to their emotional health and this course gives you an opportunity to think about why. Using songs, rhymes and play- the course is good fun but is also a space to share experiences about the transition to parenthood and the journey that becoming a parent may have taken. Everyone has a different experience.  Reflection is encouraged  by taking a question each week to ignite discussion and support further understanding of how children communicate through their behaviour.
Specific early language development interaction techniques are modelled, discussed and then tried at home each week.
Weaving child development and attachment science with songs, rhymes and stories, Baby Talk and Play aims to inspire.
'it was really fantastic to come along to baby talk and play these last few weeks. G enjoyed every minute of it as did I, and I feel like I’ve learned a lot about our interactions and developing relationship.
We also had a visit from our 3 year old nephew last weekend and could immediately see how Baby Talk and Play stays relevant at that age too!'

Parents - One to One BTaP

Baby Talk and Play 1:1 (1 hour session)
Suitable for children from birth-4 years
A 1:1 BTaP consultation aims to reassure, inspire and build confidence by exploring play, communication and interaction between you and your child. This will include trying out new ideas and approaches as well as highlighting and developing the many things that are already going well in the relationship. Debbie weaves child development with attachment science and uses her psychoanalytic training to observe and think together with the family.

-New to parenting- want some ideas for play and talk with your baby.
-A refresher of the BTaP strategies and how they apply to older children.
-Being a Mum or Dad-help! it isn't what I expected!
-A new baby is on the way - supporting your child as they become a brother or sister.
-Difficult conception, pregnancy or birth- feeling overwhelmed with the experience of finally being a Mum or Dad.
- Am I doing enough?- why do I feel so guilty?
-Concerned about your child's communication development
-Going back to work- Supporting the transition into child care.
-Wanting to do things differently from how you were brought up but not sure how to go about it.
-Setting boundaries and managing behaviour- I feel like my baby/child is in charge!
-ALL OF THE ABOVE!!

You might want to have some sessions to discuss specific behaviour or issues you are finding difficult to understand and respond to. BTaP sessions aim to help you think through what might be happening and why your child might behave in a certain way as well as agree some possible responses to this behaviour. If after some BTaP sessions it is felt that further more specialist support would be beneficial  then further contacts will be provided.
A minimum of two sessions is recommended.
'If it wasn’t for Baby Talk and Play I don’t think I would have fully realised how incredible my little girl is and might have missed out on the many magical moments we have shared as a result.'

Devised and delivered by highly skilled trainer and qualified teacher Debbie Brace, Baby Talk and Play looks in detail at how babies communicate their wants and needs. Giving simple strategies and ideas to try out both in class and at home, the course builds parent’s confidence when playing, talking and responding to their baby. Observing, listening and responding to the babies alongside their parents, Debbie helps to show families how these early practical positive interactions are the foundations for a child to develop into a thinker, a reader, a writer and a skilled communicator.

Language is the key to learning. Research has shown that children's development of language is a crucial first step in their ability to think and learn, and has a significant impact on their overall educational experience.

Baby Talk and Play has been fully endorsed by the Early Years Advisory team in Hounslow as well as specialist Early Years Teachers, Health Visitors and Speech and Language Therapists who have observed the sessions.
