Are You Receiving Me? Responding to distress in the early years, a mentally healthy approach.

-Understanding of how emotionally connected interactions impact on later life/behaviour and mental health.

Through a discussion and use of video, the vital role of the adult in providing opportunities for connected interaction particularly during times of distress will be explored. Specific connected interaction strategies will be modelled and shared for staff to think about how they respond to children during moments of upset and links will be made with this approach and attachment theory. 

ARM training session aims to answer the following questions :
-What do we mean by emotionally connected interactions?
-Why do they matter so much during times of distress? (attachment theory)
-What can get in the way?
-What is the impact of not having enough emotionally connected interactions in the early years?

-Learn about specific interaction strategies to use with children to support their developing communication skills and emotional well-being, especially during 'settling in' and care routines.

-Share ideas for multi sensory song and rhyme. 

Through analysing video footage, practitioners will be supported to look at interaction in detail and focus on how what we say and do when playing and talking with young children and babies can make a huge and exciting difference to the quality of the child’s learning experience especially during care routines which can sometimes get overlooked. Sharing key interaction strategies as well as inspiring ideas for songs, rhymes and games, participants will be given the opportunity to reflect and identify a key area for development in their own practice.

Interactive songs, rhymes and chants- how using them effectively supports language development

-Consider the role of the adult in maximising opportunities for children to hear and use songs, rhymes and chants.
-Reflect how this plays a vital role in developing early language skills
-Plan to create more opportunities for children to hear and use song/rhyme and chant both in small groups and during care and routines. 

This training explores using song and rhyme in three different ways
-Bump into songs -using songs during transitions , instruction giving and care giving
-Song and Rhyme Chatter Time -Some ideas to extend language and thinking
-Modelled interactive song and rhyme time- song words and a planning /reflection crib sheet shared

The aim is that practitioners be inspired to try out the some of the simple ideas shared and have a renewed energy for and understanding of how to effectively use song/rhyme and chants in the early years.

Settling - developing an emotionally connected approach with children and families

A Chatter Time training session considers the vital role of the practitioner in encouraging, supporting as well as extending communication development in a small group. Inspiring collections of resources, songs, rhymes and video footage will be explored. Practitioners will learn how to couple these resources with key positive interaction strategies to make the very most of conversations and learning in quality small group situations.

Storying - listening to and telling stories with children under 5 to develop early language skills.

A half-day Storying training session supports practitioners to think around the wider benefits of sharing stories with young children from birth and how this plays a crucial role in communication development. Practitioners will watch videos to identifying interaction strategies which to support children to listen to as well as tell their own stories .
